"La Citta Morta" The Messina Earthquake of 1908 While researching his father's family from the city of Messina, IGSA member Jim Forti became aware of a tremendous disaster that had befallen his ancestral home. Interviews with his great uncles and great aunt always resulted in the same response, "There is nothing to talk about, it's all gone." Subsequent research revealed the overwhelming scope of the earthquake. Jim's presentation touches on life in the city before 1908, the utter devastation of the worst earthquake in European history, and how modern advances in technology changed the way the world responds to disasters. |
